NovaCustom

I was choosing between nitrokey, purism, star labs, and nova. I ended up going with nova because I liked their UX the best and I wanted HEADS instead of edk2, and also I like the Netherlands privacy laws better than Germany. Their website made it clear which options are qubes compatible more easily than Nitro. Turnaround time on the order was great, everything works with my laptop and its quiet and cool despite running programming IDEs. I did screw up the HEADS install (myself,) because I didn't read their instructions correctly. They have 2 long pages of text which explains how to setup the laptop. Make sure you re-own the firmware INSTEAD of changing the admin LUKS password in the Qubes GUI. It's my fault for reading the docs wrong, and it's easily fixed but just heads (hah) up to anyone in the same situation make sure you read their docs carefully. Laptop is great. Exactly what I expect. I did need to do a screen tearing vsync fix in Qubes, but that's a custom option required for any qubes laptop.

I got my custom Linux laptop and could not be happier! Everything was done according to specs and shipping was awesome. No issues and would highly recommend NovaCustom to anyone interested in buying a custom Linux laptop. In the future, this is the only place I'll buy a new laptop from again! 10/10!

Novacustom was hazzle free. We got a very specific Taylor made configuration. Everything works and that is not easy as we wanted a qubes configuration which we know is difficult to get turn_key. And this even exclude a specific bios image

I ordered a V56 with custom BIOS logo and custom super key. The laptop looks great, especially the super key is super nice. I switched from windows to linux and together with coreboot+dasharoit it feels like i'm finally getting back a little digital freedom.

NovaCustom did not provide clear consistent instructions on how to change the LUKS2 Disk Recovery Key passphrase. I don't know how to rectify all the conflicting suggestions posted on the various forums. One person said that the encrypted disk header must be backed up before changing the LUKS2 Disk Recovery Key. This is all very confusing for a newbie to the world of LUKS2 and Qubes OS. So my new expensive laptop sits idle on my work desk, while I read and read and shake my head. NovaCustom is remiss in not providing proper guidance. I mean, customers deserve useful instructions after paying out over $2,000 USD. It's probably a great machine, but I don't see how to even get started. Call me disappointed in NovaCustom.

Laptop's fine—everything works as expected. Delivery was a bit slow, but I wasn't in a rush, and customer support were responsive.

Every step of the way Nova Customs and their MVP Wessel have been wonderful. I'm super happy with machine and build quality. It is incredibly light for a 16in machine. There were delays caused by parts shipments but Wessel and the team were completely transparent and communicative about the entire process and what has happening on their end. Once shipped it arrived very quickly and packed securely. I've been having a blast with the machine and Qubes OS so far and highly recommend Nova Customs to anyone looking for a machine running Linux out the box.

My laptop died suddenly and I had NovaCustom in sight so I ordered. I mentioned the mini-"crisis" and I got my laptop well ahead of schedule. I am a Linux newbie so had to contact support. They replied really quickly, nicely, I felt they really wanted to help - which they did. And followed up. I can only warmly recommend this team.

The laptop looks and feels very slick and nice. The open source firmware works well. I've installed QubesOS and Windows 11 (Dual Boot) and both work fine.

The NV41 is great. The pure specs are good and the options for high security use-cases are great. The Hardware is close to perfect for use with Qubes OS. The internal touchpad and keyboard do not use a USB controller. Neither does the network interface. This spares me some cumbersome manual configuration. Documentation for the initial configuration of the Heads firmware is unfortunately rather sparse, but Novacustom provides you with links to all the guides necessary for setup. The NV41 probably isn't for everyone. But for those who value the security provided through using Heads and Qubes, it is probably as good as it gets. There was a minor mix-up with one of the emails for the delivery missing. This was corrected by support almost immediately. Time from placing the order to delivery was about two weeks which is a lot, but I also made the mistake of ordering very close to the holidays. Overall I'm very happy with both the product and the support provided.

After a receiving shiny new laptop I had difficulties setting it up. Service was prompt, friendly and helpful. With a solution finally found. Great product with great followup service.

Although NovaCustom wasn't a complete surprise to me (I knew the brand already, most likely after following some article about Coreboot), its name was dormant for me and was reawakened in February this year, when I came across a nv41 review in an article by Solène Rapenne on her excellent blog at https://dataswamp.org/~solene/2024-01-03-laptop-review-novacustom-nv41.html Then, I remembered that there was a European manufacturer, with excellent feedback from its consumers with Coreboot bios! The choice was immediately made. The nv41 I bought is a hyper-light 14“ notebook, in beautiful and discreet bluish gray tones, with the logo on the lid standing out. Equipped with a powerful i7-1260p, 32Gb DDR4 RAM and SSD M. 2 Samsung 980, this laptop is corresponding in full to my needs. While there are ample chances for customization like different logo on the bios boot or laptop lid, the only customization I opted for was an inscription on the palmrest. On its website, however, it is visible and possible to make choices to customize the notebook and system tailored to you. For last, I couldn´t let my review end before praising Wessel professionalism and sympathy.

The laptop is of great quality, is very fast, and came with everything I ordered, and runs my operating system really good. I removed a star since there is a dead pixel at the top of the screen (which is disappointing when you pay over $3,000 CAD for a laptop), but nothing is perfect in life so it's whatever.
